**New York, NY** – A recent study published in the journal *General Psychiatry* suggests that meditation may have a profound impact on gut health. Researchers compared the gut microbiome of Tibetan Buddhist monks, known for their extensive meditation practice, to a control group.

The results were striking: the monks exhibited higher levels of beneficial bacteria, like Prevotella and Bacteroidetes, which are linked to improved mental well-being. Additionally, the monks showed stronger anti-inflammatory pathways and better metabolic health compared to the control group.

Blood samples revealed significantly lower levels of cholesterol and apolipoprotein B in the meditating monks, both of which are associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk.

“The microbiota enriched in monks was associated with a reduced risk of anxiety, depression, and cardiovascular disease and could enhance immune function,” stated the researchers.

While more research is needed to fully understand the connection between meditation and gut health, this study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that mindfulness practices can positively impact both the mind and the body.

“This is just another bit of evidence that our guts thrive when we take care of ourselves, and that includes when we meditate,” said the study’s lead author.

Beyond meditation, the study also highlights the importance of other lifestyle choices for gut health, such as a diverse diet rich in nutrients, fermented foods, adequate sleep, and regular exercise.
