**Kingsmeadow, London -** Chelsea’s Under-21s were left heartbroken after a dramatic 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion in their Premier League 2 clash on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues started brightly, with Reiss Russell-Denny opening the scoring with a fine finish in the 36th minute. Chelsea dominated possession and created numerous chances, but West Bromwich defended resolutely.
The second half saw Chelsea continue to press, but it was West Brom who found the net first, Harry Whitwell equalising after a quick counter-attack.
Just when a draw seemed likely, Chelsea suffered a cruel blow in stoppage time. West Brom capitalized on a mistake by Chelsea goalkeeper Max Merrick, with Whitwell netting his second goal to secure a dramatic victory for the Baggies.
Despite the loss, Chelsea’s performance was impressive, with a number of promising youngsters showcasing their talent. Reiss Russell-Denny stood out with his early goal, while both Shumaira Mheuka and Ato Ampah impressed after coming on as substitutes.
Chelsea will look to bounce back in their next fixture, a midweek EFL Trophy encounter against League One side Bromley on Tuesday evening.
