**Washington D.C.** – Constitutional law expert Jonathan Turley has condemned former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s recent suggestion that Americans spreading disinformation should be arrested. Turley, a vocal defender of free speech, sees Clinton’s comments as a chilling escalation of the global effort to stifle dissenting voices.
During an appearance on MSNBC, Clinton advocated for holding individuals accountable, including potential criminal charges, for spreading disinformation. She specifically referenced the need to prosecute Americans engaging in propaganda similar to Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Turley, author of “The Indispensable Right,” argues that Clinton’s stance represents a shift towards more overt state censorship. He points out that the left’s attempt to silence dissent through more subtle means, like social media pressure, has largely failed.
“What’s interesting is that for years, the left has been trying to get people to embrace censorship, but it’s hard to get a free people to give up freedom, and it’s not working,” Turley said. “And so now they’re going old school with Clinton and with countries like Brazil. They’re just going to straight state action prosecutions threatening people with arrest if you have opposing views.”
Turley further criticizes Clinton’s hypocrisy, pointing out the irony of her calling for arrests while her own campaign was accused of receiving Russian intelligence and funding the controversial Steele dossier.
Turley also highlighted Clinton’s recent attempt to persuade European Union officials to use the Digital Services Act (DSA) to force Elon Musk’s Twitter to censor American users. “That’s a former presidential candidate in the United States asking Europeans to apply their censorship laws to silence other Americans,” Turley said.
This latest controversy comes as Clinton has also accused former President Donald Trump of attempting to undermine American democracy through Project 2025, a right-wing transition plan which Trump has denied any involvement in.
Turley’s comments reflect growing concerns about the erosion of free speech in the United States and around the world. His warning against Clinton’s “chilling” proposal highlights the need for vigilance against the growing threat of government censorship and the dangers of weaponizing the law to silence dissent.
