Richard Osman, author of the best-selling “Thursday Murder Club” series, has released a new crime novel, “We Solve Murders,” featuring a fresh cast of characters. The book follows Amy Wheeler, a bodyguard for the rich and famous, and her retired cop father-in-law, Steve, who finds himself pulled back into the world of crime when several of Amy’s clients meet their demise.
The villain in the story uses ChatGPT to disguise their emails, creating a unique challenge for Amy and Steve. “My killer says, turn me into an English gentleman in everything I write and say,” Osman reveals in an interview with NPR’s Scott Simon. “And all the way through, we have no idea who it is because ChatGPT has absolutely flattened out their personality and the way they speak.”
The novel features a cast of colorful characters, including a “Jackie Collins of crime” author, a Jason Statham-type film star, and a group of seniors who prove they are far from invisible. Osman shares his fondness for writing about characters who are often underestimated, highlighting their wisdom and sharp minds.
“I find pure unpleasant evilness quite hard to do,” Osman admits. “I’d rather see someone’s internal monologue being like yours and mine, and then, you know, we’re slightly taken by surprise when they turn out to be the baddie.”
The novel explores themes of fame, the world of Hollywood, and the ever-growing influence of technology, making “We Solve Murders” a captivating read for fans of crime fiction and witty, character-driven narratives.
