Fri Sep 20 13:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Iowa’s Yahya Black: From Quiet Recruit to Vocal Leader
**Iowa City, IA** – Yahya Black, a towering 6-foot-5, 317-pound senior defensive tackle for the Iowa Hawkeyes, has come a long way since arriving on campus as a quiet, unassuming recruit. While Black was a four-star prospect coming out of high school, he initially struggled to find his footing in the competitive world of Iowa football.
“He was kind of quiet and reserved and almost held back a little bit,” said head coach Kirk Ferentz. “And for three years I wasn’t quite sure if he liked it here.”
Black himself admits he got “whooped” nearly every day in practice by former Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum, who is now with the Baltimore Ravens. The transition from dominating high school competition to facing elite college athletes was difficult, causing Black to withdraw.
However, over time, Black has blossomed into a vocal leader on the Iowa defense, a far cry from the reserved freshman he once was. He’s even garnered a reputation for playfully teasing his teammates, a stark contrast to his former quiet demeanor.
“Chauncey Golston came back and was at a game and he was, like, ‘You talk? You actually talk to people?'” Black said, laughing. “It’s just part of being here. You’re going to grow as a person.”
Black’s evolution wasn’t just about personality; it was about his development as a player. Despite limited exposure to college football before arriving in Iowa, Black’s passion for the sport was undeniable.
His high school coach, Terry Bahlmann, saw his potential and saw it explode during Black’s senior year. “He would go 100 miles an hour all the time,” Bahlmann said. “He didn’t use his technique all the time that he needed to and just use his raw power… but the potential, once he used some technique and leverage… he just exploded onto the scene.”
Black’s impact on both sides of the ball earned him all-state honors and a district defensive player of the year award. His senior year performance, highlighted by a dominant game against Fairmont, cemented his reputation as a leader and a force to be reckoned with.
Black’s journey from quiet recruit to vocal leader is a testament to his dedication and growth. While he may not be a flashy player who racks up big numbers, Black’s impact on the field is undeniable. His commitment to learning, his passion for the game, and his infectious enthusiasm have made him an integral part of the Iowa defense.
“He’s going to show up, and he’s going to make the ball go the other way,” said center Logan Jones. “He’s going to drive somebody back three or four yards… You’re not going to find a guy who’s, one, as smart as him, or as big and physical and athletic as he is.”
As Black enters his senior season, he’s ready to lead the Hawkeyes to new heights, showcasing the transformation that has taken place over his collegiate career.
