Fri Sep 20 09:06:03 UTC 2024: ## Devastating Floods in West and Central Africa Leave Thousands Dead and Displaced

**ABUJA, Nigeria (AP)** — Torrential rains across West and Central Africa have unleashed the most catastrophic floods in decades, causing widespread devastation and leaving thousands dead and displaced. The hardest-hit countries include Chad, Nigeria, Mali, and Niger.

The floods, which have claimed over 1,000 lives this year, have exacerbated pre-existing humanitarian crises, particularly in Nigeria’s Borno state, which has been battling an insurgency by the extremist group Boko Haram.

In Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, residents have described harrowing scenes of houses being swept away, crocodiles and snakes floating amongst human bodies, and inmates escaping from a flooded prison. The city’s main dam failed, releasing over 540 billion liters of water, which inundated the city and damaged key bridges.

Aishatu Ba’agana, a mother of three, recounts the terrifying moment she had to abandon her newborn baby as floodwaters overwhelmed her home. “I haven’t seen any of them since,” she said, weeping.

The floods have also severely impacted Niger, where over 841,000 people have been affected, including Harira Adamou, a single mother of six who lost her mud hut in Agadez. “The rooms are destroyed; the walls fell down,” she said.

While rescue efforts continue, the full scale of the devastation is still unfolding. Authorities are overwhelmed, and many residents are struggling to survive without support. Despite efforts from organizations like the World Food Program and USAID, many survivors are left to fend for themselves.

Experts warn that Africa, despite contributing a small fraction of global greenhouse gas emissions, is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events. Climate change is expected to exacerbate these events in the future, leading to further humanitarian crises.

The floods have also exposed the fragility of infrastructure in the affected regions, highlighting the urgent need for investment in flood mitigation and disaster preparedness measures.

As the rains continue and more floods are predicted, the international community is urged to provide greater assistance to those affected.
