Fri Sep 20 08:57:55 UTC 2024: ## Vietnam’s Visit to North Korea Sparks Concerns Over US, South Korea Relations

**HANOI, VIETNAM –** Vietnam’s recent defense ministry delegation visit to North Korea has raised eyebrows among analysts, who warn that closer ties with Pyongyang could damage Hanoi’s burgeoning relationships with the US and South Korea. The trip, which included a meeting between Vietnam’s deputy defense minister and his North Korean counterpart, aimed to boost cooperation in areas such as military medicine, border defense, and information sharing.

The visit comes on the heels of North Korea unveiling images of uranium enrichment centrifuges, raising concerns about its nuclear weapons program and further straining relations with the international community. North Korea is currently under UN Security Council sanctions for its weapons programs.

“This trip can send very misleading signals about Vietnam’s intention, especially as defense minister Phan Van Giang has just visited the United States,” an anonymous Vietnamese analyst remarked.

Vietnam’s desire to maintain friendly relations with all nations is acknowledged, but analysts emphasize the importance of aligning with international norms and avoiding actions that could contradict UN sanctions.

While Vietnam is unlikely to procure weapons from North Korea due to quality concerns and the potential for disastrous consequences, the visit still raises concerns about the potential for strained relations with South Korea, a key economic and strategic partner.

South Korea has become one of Vietnam’s most important partners, and their relationship was upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2022. Some Korean analysts are cautious about any potential arms transfer between Vietnam and North Korea, highlighting the importance of trust and careful consideration in such matters.

Vietnam’s decision to visit North Korea comes at a time when Pyongyang is deepening its ties with Russia, with both countries recently announcing a partnership treaty promising mutual military support.

This visit has sparked anxieties about the potential for Vietnam to become caught between these competing geopolitical forces, potentially undermining its efforts to maintain strong relationships with both the US and South Korea.
