The 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival kicks off this evening with a lineup that boasts both established and emerging filmmakers, as well as some notable controversies.
Festival director José Luis Rebordinos, despite the usual pre-opening night organizational chaos, is confident in this year’s selections, which he considers “much stronger” than previous years.
The festival’s opening night film is Audrey Diwan’s “Emmanuelle,” a modern reimagining of the classic erotic film that Rebordinos describes as “a feminist Emmanuelle.” He emphasizes the film’s focus on female desire and consent, making it a perfect choice for a festival known for its political engagement.
While Rebordinos acknowledges San Sebastian’s tendency to engage with wider social issues, he emphasizes that they are “not activists,” aiming to present a balanced program of entertaining films alongside those that explore current global events. He insists that the festival welcomes “people on both the left and right,” but draws a line at those who disrespect human rights.
One such controversial choice is the inclusion of Johnny Depp’s latest directorial effort, “Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness.” Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding Depp, Rebordinos defends the film, calling it “very free” and “special” while declining to comment on the allegations against Depp.
The festival also features a growing industry focus with its Creative Investors’ Conference, which has proven successful in connecting Spanish producers with international figures.
Other highlights include Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl,” starring Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dave Bautista, and Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths.” The competition jury, led by Spanish filmmaker Jaione Camborda, will be tasked with selecting the best from this diverse selection.
