Fri Sep 20 13:12:00 UTC 2024: ## Microsoft and Constellation Reopen Three Mile Island Reactor for AI Power

**Harrisburg, PA** – In a landmark agreement, Microsoft and energy giant Constellation have partnered to reopen a nuclear reactor at the infamous Three Mile Island facility. This deal will see the tech giant purchase energy from the newly named Crane Clean Energy Center to power its data centers, which are experiencing surging energy demands due to the growing use of artificial intelligence.

The agreement marks the return of Three Mile Island Unit 1, which was closed in 2019 due to financial difficulties. The reactor is expected to come online in 2028, creating 3,400 jobs and generating billions in tax revenue for Pennsylvania. Constellation will invest heavily in refurbishing the plant, including replacing critical components like the turbine and generator.

Constellation CEO Joe Dominguez highlighted the importance of reliable and carbon-free energy sources like nuclear power for industries like data centers. “Powering industries critical to our nation’s global economic and technological competitiveness requires an abundance of energy that is carbon-free and reliable every hour of every day, and nuclear plants are the only energy sources that can consistently deliver on that promise,” he stated.

The reactor, located next to but independent from the infamous Unit 2 reactor that experienced a partial meltdown in 1979, is set to operate for at least another 30 years. The Crane Clean Energy Center will contribute 800 megawatts to the grid, helping meet the growing energy demands of the tech industry.

This partnership underscores the increasing pressure on energy supply driven by AI development. The International Energy Agency estimates that data centers could consume over 1,000 terawatt hours of electricity by 2026. With AI applications like ChatGPT consuming significant power, companies like Microsoft are looking to secure reliable and sustainable energy sources to power their operations.
