**Kumasi, Ghana** – The College of Health Sciences (CHS) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has launched an endowment fund aimed at raising GHC150,000 to address critical infrastructure and funding challenges. This initiative is crucial for the College, which currently faces limitations in admitting qualified students due to resource constraints.
Established in 2005, the CHS has grown significantly, encompassing seven schools and faculties, including the renowned KNUST School of Medical Sciences and the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. However, despite its academic excellence, the College has been unable to admit a large number of qualified applicants due to a lack of adequate facilities and funding.
Prof. Daniel Ansong, Chairman of the CHS Endowment Fund, expressed concern over the situation during a press conference. “The College has established this endowment fund to raise enough money to provide more facilities, expand resources, and take in more students,” he stated. “This will allow us to train the next generation of health professionals for Ghana.”
The fund will also support research activities within the CHS and provide financial assistance to needy students facing difficulties in paying tuition fees. Prof. Ansong highlighted the issue of brain drain, with many talented Ghanaian graduates opting for opportunities in western countries due to attractive scholarships and a more conducive environment. He emphasized that the endowment fund will help complement government efforts to expand universities and prevent the loss of skilled professionals.
The CHS Endowment Fund initiative is a significant step towards ensuring the College can continue to provide high-quality education and research in the health sciences. It is hoped that this fund will attract generous contributions from individuals, organizations, and corporations, enabling the CHS to overcome its financial hurdles and play a crucial role in developing Ghana’s healthcare workforce.
