**Lausanne, Switzerland:** Retired Indian hockey legend PR Sreejesh has been nominated for the prestigious FIH Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year Award 2024. This recognition comes after his stellar performance at the recent Paris Olympics, where he played a crucial role in India’s bronze medal winning campaign.
Sreejesh, often referred to as the ‘Great Wall of Indian Hockey’, retired from international hockey after the Olympics, but his impact on the sport remains undeniable. His crucial saves, particularly during the intense quarterfinal match against Great Britain, helped India secure a place in the semifinals.
“Every save I made in that tournament was not just about me; it was about the entire team and our country’s support,” Sreejesh said. “Being nominated for this award is a reflection of our collective spirit and the incredible journey we’ve had together.”
The 36-year-old goalkeeper was also instrumental in India’s historic back-to-back Olympic medals, a feat achieved for the first time in over 50 years.
Sreejesh faces stiff competition for the award from Pirmin Blaak (Netherlands), Luis Calzado (Spain), Jean-Paul Danneberg (GER), and Tomas Santiago (Argentina).
The voting process will remain open until October 11th for national associations, fans, players, coaches, officials, and media. The winner will be announced later this year.
Sreejesh’s nomination is a testament to his exceptional skills and dedication to the sport. His career has been adorned with numerous awards, including the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021 and 2022, the Arjuna Award, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, and the World Games Athlete of the Year.
In his 18-year international career, Sreejesh represented India in over 300 matches and participated in four Olympic Games. He leaves behind a legacy that inspires future generations of hockey players.
