**Washington, D.C.** – Despite only eight electric vehicle charging stations being built so far under the Inflation Reduction Act’s $7.5 billion investment, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg insists the project is “on track.”
This statement comes after CNBC’s Joe Kernen questioned the slow progress, highlighting the disparity between the eight stations built and the ambitious goal of reaching 500,000 charging stations by 2030.
Buttigieg acknowledged the current number of stations is “a handful,” but emphasized that the majority of construction is scheduled for the latter half of the decade, with significant activity expected in 2027 and 2028.
The Secretary explained that the federal funding is targeting “gaps in the market” where private sector investment is currently lacking, such as rural areas, apartment buildings, and locations where profitability is limited.
He further stated that while 80% of EV charging happens at home, the projected increase in EV sales by 2030 necessitates a substantial increase in publicly available charging infrastructure.
This news highlights the ongoing effort to create a nationwide network of EV charging stations to support the growing adoption of electric vehicles. While progress appears slow at the moment, the Department of Transportation assures that the goal of 500,000 charging stations by 2030 remains achievable.
