Sat Sep 21 17:50:58 UTC 2024: ## Atishi Takes Oath as Delhi’s Youngest Woman Chief Minister
**New Delhi, India:** AAP leader Atishi was sworn in as the third woman chief minister of Delhi on Saturday, becoming the youngest to hold the post. The 43-year-old Kalkaji MLA, a key figure in the AAP, will serve a brief tenure as assembly elections in the national capital are scheduled for February.
Atishi, a first-time legislator, previously managed the party’s operations during Arvind Kejriwal’s time in Tihar jail in connection with the excise policy case. Her appointment follows Kejriwal’s resignation as chief minister.
Atishi follows in the footsteps of BJP’s Sushma Swaraj and Congress’ Sheila Dikshit, both of whom previously held the top position in Delhi. Notably, she is only the second woman chief minister currently serving in India, alongside West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee.
This appointment adds to a notable list of women who have served as chief ministers in independent India. Sucheta Kripalani, the first woman to hold the position, led the Congress government in Uttar Pradesh from 1963 to 1967. Since then, several other women have held this prestigious post, including Nandini Satpathy in Odisha, J Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu, and Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh.
While Atishi’s tenure as chief minister will be short, her appointment marks a significant moment for the AAP and highlights the increasing representation of women in Indian politics.
