Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), sounded the alarm on Thursday about the continued prevalence of antisemitism on college campuses, stating that the situation remains “terrible” and “like nothing has changed.” Speaking on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Greenblatt lamented the lack of media coverage surrounding the issue, particularly in the wake of recent incidents.
Greenblatt pointed to the ongoing presence of antisemitic sentiments within the student population, as well as the continued employment of academics like Cornell Professor Russell Rickford, who has publicly praised the October 7 attacks, as evidence of a systemic problem. He expressed incredulity that an employee with such a blatant disregard for their responsibilities would be allowed to continue working at a university, drawing a parallel to the scenario in the corporate world.
Co-host Joe Kernen echoed Greenblatt’s concerns, arguing that the tenure system, which grants professors permanent employment and academic freedom, contributes to the problem by providing them with a platform to express discriminatory views without facing repercussions. Greenblatt agreed, suggesting a re-examination of the tenure system while acknowledging its merits in fostering academic research.
The ADL’s call for reform comes at a time of growing concern about the rise of antisemitism in academia and the need to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for Jewish students on college campuses.
