**Tirupati, India** – The sacred Tirupati laddoo, a beloved offering at the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, is at the center of a controversy after laboratory tests revealed the presence of fish oil and beef tallow in the ghee used to make the sweets.

Andhra Pradesh minister Nara Lokesh Naidu, who claims the ghee was procured under the previous government, has expressed concern, stating that the use of these ingredients raises religious and health concerns for devotees.

“The tender for procuring the ghee was awarded by the previous government,” Naidu said. “After complaints, it was tested and action was initiated.”

Experts warn that the presence of beef tallow, a rendered animal fat, could cause digestive issues for those unaccustomed to consuming it, especially vegetarians.

Dr. Pranav Honnavara Srinivasan, a consultant gastroenterologist, explains that beef tallow, while traditionally used in cooking and other industries, can lead to bloating, gas, stomach cramps, and even diarrhoea in individuals not accustomed to it.

“Saturated fats like those in tallow are harder for the body to break down compared to plant-based fats,” Dr. Srinivasan said.

Nutritionist Ipsita Chakraborty adds that beef tallow, high in saturated fat, can raise LDL cholesterol, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The use of fish oil, while not a common ingredient in cooking, also raises concerns about the taste and cultural implications for devotees.

This revelation has sparked outrage among devotees, who are concerned about the religious and health implications of consuming the laddoo, which is considered sacred.

The temple authorities are yet to respond to the controversy, but the news has sparked a debate about the quality and integrity of religious offerings.
