Thu Sep 19 07:27:40 UTC 2024: ## UK Abstains on UN Resolution on Israel’s Presence in Occupied Territories

**New York, September 18, 2024** – The United Kingdom abstained from a vote on a UN General Assembly resolution concerning the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion on Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. While supporting the ICJ’s core findings, the UK believes the resolution lacks clarity to effectively advance a two-state solution.

In a statement delivered by Ambassador Barbara Woodward, the UK Permanent Representative to the UN, the UK reiterated its commitment to international law and emphasized the need for a negotiated settlement between Israel and Palestine. The UK called for renewed efforts to achieve a “safe and secure Israel alongside a safe and secure Palestinian state.”

While abstaining from the vote, the UK stressed its “unwavering determination” to pursue a two-state solution and expressed its clear view that Israel should “bring an end to its presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories as rapidly as possible.”

The UK expressed grave concern over Israel’s continued expansion of settlements in violation of international law, calling for an immediate halt. The UK also condemned the violence perpetrated by extremist settlers against Palestinian communities, urging Israel to hold those responsible accountable.

The UK has imposed sanctions on individuals and entities linked to these acts and will continue to monitor and consider further sanctions as appropriate.

The UK highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

In closing, the UK reiterated its commitment to working towards a peaceful and negotiated two-state solution, providing long-term peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
