Thu Sep 19 07:27:35 UTC 2024: ## Mainland China Suspends Zero-Tariff Policy for Taiwanese Products, Citing Independence Stance

**BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua)** – The mainland has decided to suspend its zero-tariff policies for certain agricultural products from Taiwan, effective September 25th, 2024. This decision, according to a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, Chen Binhua, is a direct response to the Taiwan authorities’ “obstinate adherence” to a Taiwan independence stance and provocative actions.

The zero-tariff policy, initially implemented in 2005 and expanded in 2007, had exempted 34 Taiwanese agricultural products, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood, from import tariffs. This policy, according to Chen, had significantly benefited farmers and workers in Taiwan’s agriculture and fishery industries by expanding their market access on the mainland.

However, Chen argues that the Taiwan authorities led by Lai Ching-te have continuously sought independence, escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait and hindering exchange and cooperation. This includes a unilateral restriction on over 1,000 mainland agricultural products from entering Taiwan.

Despite this action, the spokesperson reiterated the mainland’s commitment to “respect, care for, and bring benefits” to Taiwan compatriots. He encouraged Taiwanese farmers and citizens to continue developing their businesses on the mainland.

Chen also issued a stern warning, stating that pursuing Taiwan independence will only bring “disaster and harm” to the island and that those who support independence will ultimately undermine their own interests.
