**Anantapur:** Sanju Samson showcased his exceptional batting prowess with a blistering century for India D in the Duleep Trophy third-round match against India B on Tuesday. The knock, his first red-ball ton in 1740 days, is a significant statement as the wicketkeeper-batsman aims to solidify his place in the Indian Test team.
Samson, coming into bat with India D at 175/4, built upon the strong foundation laid by Devdutt Padikkal, Srikar Bharat, and Ricky Bhui, all of whom registered half-centuries. The right-hander displayed aggression throughout his innings, propelling India D past the 300-run mark on the opening day. He finished Day 1 unbeaten on 89 and completed his century early on Day 2 with a magnificent knock.
Samson’s century, a testament to his remarkable skill and timing, came off just 101 balls, decorated with 12 boundaries and 3 sixes. It was a bittersweet moment, however, as he departed shortly after reaching the milestone. This was his 11th first-class century, adding to his impressive record of 3,774 runs in 64 matches at an average over 38.
Despite missing the first round of the Duleep Trophy and scoring only 40 and 5 in the second round, Samson has clearly turned his form around in the final round, highlighting his potential for the highest level. While he is yet to make his Test debut, he has already represented India in 16 ODIs and 30 T20Is. His recent performance in the Duleep Trophy will undoubtedly bolster his chances for a Test call-up.
