Thu Sep 19 07:28:02 UTC 2024: ## US, Australia, and Canada Impose Sanctions on Iranian Officials for Human Rights Abuses

**Washington, D.C. -** The United States, in coordination with Australia and Canada, announced today the imposition of sanctions on 12 individuals linked to the Iranian government’s violent and coercive tactics both domestically and internationally. The sanctions target members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, officials of Iran’s Prisons Organization, and those responsible for lethal operations abroad.

The individuals targeted are accused of human rights abuses, including the deaths and violent repression of prisoners protesting their conditions, the use of torture and sexual assault against prisoners, the denial of medical care to political prisoners, and the kidnapping of regime critics abroad.

This action comes in response to the ongoing systematic human rights violations committed by the Iranian regime since the death of Mahsa Zhina Amini in 2022. Amini’s arrest and death for challenging the regime’s mandatory hijab laws sparked a nationwide movement demanding freedom and justice, met with brutal suppression by the Iranian government.

“The voices of the Iranian people demanding basic freedoms deserve to be heard,” said Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson. “The United States will continue to work with our allies and partners to promote accountability for the regime’s human rights abuses.”

The US Department of the Treasury implemented these sanctions under Executive Order 13553. The sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans.

This action highlights the ongoing commitment of the US and its allies to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its human rights abuses. The US continues to support the Iranian people through various initiatives, including advocating for the renewal of the UN Special Rapporteur and Fact-Finding Mission on the human rights situation in Iran and providing anti-censorship tools to ensure internet access for millions of Iranians.
