Thu Sep 19 08:11:24 UTC 2024: ## Samsung Workers Strike Disrupts Production Ahead of Diwali Season in Tamil Nadu

**Chennai, India:** Around 1,500 workers at the Samsung Electronics Plant in Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu, have been on strike for ten days, demanding union recognition, an end to mandatory overtime, an eight-hour work schedule, and pay parity for workers with equal experience. This comes at a crucial time for the company as it prepares for the Diwali season, which usually sees a surge in demand for its electronics products.

Despite the strike, Tamil Nadu Labour Minister CV Ganesan has assured the public that the department is actively engaging with both Samsung management and trade unions to resolve the issue. The Minister maintains that production has not been affected so far.

The strike coincides with Tamil Nadu’s efforts to establish Chennai as a key manufacturing hub. Recently, Chief Minister MK Stalin secured investment commitments worth Rs 7,000 crore from US companies.

The strike has sparked concerns about the potential impact on Samsung’s production during a crucial sales period. Sources indicate that the company is apprehensive about the possibility of similar challenges in the future if it engages with the CITU, a trade union backing the striking workers.

The Tamil Nadu government, while committed to addressing workers’ concerns, has historically emphasized resolving issues without the presence of unions.

The Labor Department is optimistic about resolving the issue swiftly. Minister Ganesan cited the successful resolution of a previous strike by Foxconn workers as an example of the government’s commitment to finding solutions.
