**BEIRUT, Lebanon** – Israeli warplanes launched their most intense airstrikes on southern Lebanon in almost a year, escalating the conflict with Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group, according to Lebanese security sources. The strikes follow a week of escalating tensions, with Hezbollah accusing Israel of attacks that killed 37 people and injured thousands.
The White House has expressed concern about the escalating situation, stating a diplomatic solution is urgent. The UK has called for an immediate ceasefire.
Speaking on Thursday night, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel would continue military action against Hezbollah, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safe return of Israeli citizens. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also convened his ministers for consultations.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah addressed the situation in a televised broadcast, acknowledging the severity of the Israeli attacks but emphasizing his group’s resolve. “Yes, we received a big and harsh blow, but this is also the nature of war,” he said.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Commander Hossein Salami pledged support for Hezbollah, stating that Israel would face a “crushing response.”
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, urged restraint from all parties, warning against actions that could further complicate efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.
The attacks on Hezbollah communications equipment have instilled fear across Lebanon, with many abandoning electronic devices out of concern they could be targets.
Israel has maintained that its conflict with Hezbollah is part of a larger regional confrontation with Iran, which backs both Hezbollah and Hamas in Gaza.
The escalation comes amid concerns of a wider regional conflict, with both sides showing no signs of backing down.
