Thu Sep 19 07:28:02 UTC 2024: ## Canada Imposes New Sanctions on Iran Following Mahsa Amini’s Death Anniversary

**Ottawa, Ontario (September 18, 2024)** – Canada has announced further sanctions against Iran, coinciding with the second anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in police custody after being detained for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code.

The new sanctions target five Iranian political figures deemed responsible for implementing repressive policies and violently suppressing protests. These measures are being taken in coordination with Australia and the United States, who are also implementing similar actions this week.

The three countries cited Iran’s escalating repression of women and its brutal crackdown on citizen demonstrations, as well as its ongoing violations of international peace and security, as justification for the sanctions.

Canada has previously taken a hard stance against Iran’s regime, designating the country as a state sponsor of terrorism in 2012 and listing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity in 2024. These latest sanctions, along with previous measures, aim to put pressure on Iran to change its behavior.

“Today’s sanctions send another clear message to Iran: We cannot and will not remain silent while Iran continues its disregard for the human rights of its people,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly. “Canada and its allies will not hesitate to take action against Iran’s repressive and discriminatory laws and policies targeted at women, girls, and minorities.”

With these new measures, Canada has now sanctioned a total of 205 Iranian individuals and 250 Iranian entities. The Canadian government has pledged to continue to impose further measures until Iran ceases its “abhorrent conduct.”
