WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) launched a scathing attack on Vice President Kamala Harris’s economic plans at an America First Policy Institute forum on Tuesday, labeling them as “socialist” and “centralized price controls.” Johnson, using a theatrical tone, compared Harris’s proposed policies to an “Oprah Winfrey presidential campaign,” suggesting they were too focused on government handouts and lacked focus on job creation.
Johnson went on to unveil a “very aggressive” counter-agenda for Republicans in the event of a unified government victory in November, promising to focus on extending the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and enacting policies that “respect the dignity of work.” He also pledged to take a hard stance against China, arguing that the Harris-Biden administration’s policies have weakened American manufacturing and energy independence.
Johnson specifically criticized Harris’s proposed 28% corporate tax rate, which he said would put American businesses at a disadvantage compared to Chinese competitors. He also attacked the Inflation Reduction Act, accusing it of being a wasteful expenditure that sends taxpayer dollars to China.
Johnson’s remarks come as Republicans seek to capitalize on voters’ concerns about inflation and the economy. He and other GOP leaders have repeatedly accused the Biden administration of fueling inflation with its spending policies and are promising to implement policies that encourage economic growth and job creation.
The Republican agenda, however, is likely to face obstacles, especially considering the significant cost of some of its key components. Former President Donald Trump, who remains a powerful force within the GOP, has already called for restoring the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction, which would add an estimated $1.2 trillion to the cost of a revamped tax law. This raises questions about the party’s commitment to lowering spending, even as they criticize the Biden administration’s fiscal policies.
The upcoming election will be a pivotal moment in the debate over the nation’s economic future, with both parties offering starkly contrasting visions for how to address the challenges facing Americans.
