Chennai, India: Former India cricketer Parthiv Patel expressed surprise at the decision to send Rishabh Pant ahead of KL Rahul in the batting order during the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai. After a shaky start that saw India reduced to 34/3, Pant’s promotion, despite Rahul being a natural opener, seemed to work in the team’s favor, as he formed a crucial partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal.
“I was surprised, usually the coach and the captain want a left and right combination,” Patel told Jio Cinema. “KL Rahul is a natural opener, especially when India had lost a few wickets early on. So, I was expecting him to come in, but Rishabh Pant had all the answers.”
Patel suggested that the team’s strategy might have been to exploit Bangladesh’s apparent struggle against left-handed batters. “I’m sure there was a plan behind it,” he added. “Bangladesh bowlers were not bowling as well to left-handed batters, and that could be the reason for sending Rishabh ahead of KL Rahul.”
