Wed Sep 18 06:53:00 UTC 2024: ## Garda Shortage in Thomastown, Kilkenny Raises Concerns

**Thomastown, Kilkenny:** A local councillor has raised concerns about the lack of Garda presence in the Thomastown policing district, which encompasses several surrounding towns and villages. Cllr Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere, chairman of the Callan Thomastown Municipal District, believes the current shortage of Gardaí is negatively impacting community policing and residents’ feeling of safety.

“The number of gardaí in the area remains insufficient to meet the growing demand,” commented Cllr Cleere. He expressed worry that the shortage not only affects the security of the region, but also the relationship between local residents and the Gardaí.

The lack of visible Garda presence is a pressing issue for residents of Thomastown, Graignamanagh, Goresbridge, Ballyhale, and Mullinavat, who are increasingly concerned about the potential for increased crime rates.

Cllr Cleere proposes a simple solution: “We need more gardaí on the ground in Thomastown and it’s neighbouring substations to ensure that the area remains a safe place to live and work.”

He emphasizes the importance of addressing the situation promptly to maintain the community’s safety and wellbeing.

“Kilkenny is a great place to live and work, but we must ensure it remains that way… we cannot afford to let crime rates increase and put the safety of our community at risk,” said Cleere. “It’s time for the government to act, and for all of us to work together to make our towns a safer and more connected place.”
