Wed Sep 18 21:07:00 UTC 2024: ## Australian ODI squad hit by illness, Beardman’s debut unlikely
**Nottingham, England:** Australia’s hopes of a 13th consecutive ODI victory have been thrown into disarray after illness swept through the squad ahead of the opening match against England on Thursday.
Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are among the key bowlers who have been struck down, leaving the tourists with depleted bowling stocks. Captain Mitchell Marsh admitted the team is “working through some things” and conceded that the schedule could necessitate careful management of the bowlers.
While 19-year-old fast bowler Mahli Beardman was called up as a replacement, he is unlikely to make his international debut this early in the series. Beardman, who only arrived in the UK on Tuesday, has not even bowled in training yet.
Despite the illness, Marsh remained optimistic, stating that “virtually everyone” is fit and available to play. However, the impact on the bowling line-up is significant, with the likes of Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshius, Aaron Hardie, and Cameron Green likely to shoulder a heavy workload.
While Beardman will be on standby, Marsh emphasized that the young bowler will “learn a lot” by being part of the squad.
England is also facing challenges with regular captain Jos Buttler out injured and Harry Brook leading the side. This series promises to be a fascinating clash with both teams facing new and unexpected hurdles.
