A new study has revealed that the common Irish name “Sean” is the most mispronounced name globally, despite its popularity in the UK and Ireland. The study, conducted by WordFinderX using data from the pronunciation website Forvo, analyzed names from diverse cultures and found that “Sean” was requested for pronunciation a staggering one million times, surpassing the second most mispronounced name, the Basque name “Xuxa,” by almost 200,000 listens.
While “Sean” is pronounced as “Shawn” in English and means “God is gracious,” many individuals around the world struggle to pronounce it correctly. Interestingly, several other names popular in the UK also made the top 20 list of most mispronounced names, including “Alexander,” “Benjamin,” “Michael,” “Thomas,” “David,” “Mary,” and “Laura.”
The study also highlighted the difficulty in pronouncing the Irish girl’s name “Saoirse,” which landed in 20th place with 293,000 listens. Notably, despite their mispronunciation rates, several of these names remain popular in the UK.
While “Sean” did not make it into the top 100 most popular boy’s names in the UK, it remains a common choice for parents. This study reveals that even common names can present pronunciation challenges, highlighting the global diversity of names and the importance of understanding different cultural pronunciations.
