**London, UK** – New data from the Boston Consulting Group has revealed that India is the world’s leading user of ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot developed by OpenAI. The survey, which polled individuals across the globe, found that 45% of Indian respondents reported using the AI service, placing it far ahead of other countries.
Morocco (38%), the United Arab Emirates (34%), Indonesia and Argentina (both 32%), and South Africa (31%) round out the top five, highlighting a strong presence of developing nations in the early adoption of ChatGPT. Western countries, including the US, Australia, and the UK, reported significantly lower usage rates.
While ChatGPT was created in the US, only 22% of Americans reported using the AI tool. The survey suggests that countries with robust IT sectors, particularly India, the UAE, Indonesia, and China, have embraced ChatGPT more readily.
Interestingly, despite the high usage rates, the public remains cautious about the implications of AI. While 75% of respondents admitted to using ChatGPT or another AI-powered tool, concerns regarding privacy issues and the impact of AI on employment were evident.
However, a strong majority (70%) expressed excitement about using AI in the workplace, with 15% expressing concern. Consumers are optimistic about AI’s potential to improve efficiency, but remain wary of its broader societal impact.
“Many business leaders assume their technological changes are invisible to consumers,” said Aparna Bharadwaj, global leader of BCG’s Global Advantage practice. “But the opposite is true when it comes to generative AI. Consumers have both positive and negative views.”
This research emphasizes the need for business leaders to consider consumer perspectives when deploying AI, particularly in the context of ChatGPT’s global adoption. While cost and effectiveness are crucial considerations, the public’s perception of AI is equally important for successful implementation.
