Wed Sep 18 15:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis Breaks Gavaskar’s Record with Eighth Consecutive Test Fifty
**Galle, Sri Lanka:** Sri Lankan batter Kamindu Mendis has continued his impressive form, becoming only the second batsman after Saud Shakeel to score a fifty in each of his first seven Test matches. This achievement saw him surpass the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who had previously held the record for scoring a fifty in each of his first six Tests.
Mendis, who made his Test debut in Galle against Australia in 2022, achieved this milestone on the first day of the first Test against New Zealand. He has been in exceptional form since returning to the Test team earlier this year, scoring centuries against Bangladesh and a string of impressive scores in the recent series against England. His latest fifty came off 73 deliveries, helping Sri Lanka build a partnership with Angelo Mathews after a number of early dismissals.
Despite Mendis’s performance, New Zealand’s William O’Rourke has been a thorn in the side of the Sri Lankan batting order, claiming three wickets. While other Sri Lankan batsmen, like Pathum Nissanka, Dinesh Chandimal, and Mathews, have gotten off to starts, they have been unable to convert those starts into substantial scores.
Mendis’s impressive record and his ability to adapt to different conditions and bowling attacks have solidified his place as a crucial player for Sri Lanka’s Test team. As he continues to build his career, fans will be eager to see if he can further enhance his remarkable start to his Test career.
