Wed Sep 18 18:12:30 UTC 2024: ## India Approves ‘One Nation One Election’ Plan, Aiming for Simultaneous Polls

**New Delhi:** In a landmark decision, the Indian Cabinet has approved the implementation of ‘One Nation One Election,’ a proposal that aims to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament) and state assemblies across the country.

The decision, based on the recommendations of a panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi hailed the move as a “crucial step” towards a more vibrant and participatory democracy, thanking Kovind for his extensive consultations with stakeholders including political parties and experts.

The plan outlines a two-phase approach:

**Phase 1:** Simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies.

**Phase 2:** Synchronized elections for local bodies (panchayats and municipalities) within 100 days of the general elections.

A common electoral roll will be used for all elections, with voter ID cards prepared by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in coordination with state authorities. The government plans to initiate detailed discussions across the nation and form an implementation group to oversee the process.

The Committee’s report addresses potential challenges, recommending that in cases of hung parliaments, no-confidence motions, or other such events, fresh elections may be held.

This move aims to reduce election-related expenses, streamline election processes, and create a more unified political calendar for the country. However, the plan has also drawn criticism from some quarters who argue that it might undermine the federal structure of India and lead to imbalances in state politics.

The government is expected to hold further consultations and address concerns before implementing the plan in its entirety.
