Cork’s Dolphin RFC are entering the Energia All Ireland League men’s 2C campaign with renewed purpose, fueled by a desire to honour the memory of their late team-mate, Craig O’Herlihy. The 23-year-old back-rower tragically passed away in August after a road accident, four months after scoring a try in last season’s relegation play-off final.
New vice-captain Brian O’Mahony, speaking to the Irish Examiner, stated that the squad is “trying extra hard” to achieve a swift return to the 2B division in honour of O’Herlihy. They are aiming for a top-four finish, which would provide a chance to earn promotion through the play-offs.
Dolphin’s journey back to the higher division will be further aided by the appointment of former player and sports psychologist, Tim Marron. Marron, who has already made a positive impact on the team, will be working with the players on mental resilience and performance.
Dolphin’s coaching staff, led by director of coaching Steve Ford, have identified their poor away form as a key area for improvement. O’Mahony acknowledged the team’s struggles away from home, going two seasons without an away win. The team are exploring various strategies to improve their performances on the road, including changes to their pre-game routines and travel plans.
Dolphin’s first game of the season takes place this Saturday against Bruff, and the squad is determined to make their late team-mate proud by achieving success on and off the pitch.
