**Malappuram, Kerala:** A fresh Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala has put the state on high alert, with 175 individuals identified as contacts of the recent case, including 74 healthcare workers. This comes after a 24-year-old man succumbed to the virus on September 9th, marking the second fatality this year.
The Kerala Health Minister, Veena George, has announced that 126 people are on the primary contact list, with 104 deemed high-risk. Another 49 individuals are categorized as secondary contacts. Ten individuals from the contact list are currently receiving medical treatment at Manjeri Medical College Hospital, and the results of 13 individuals being tested for the virus are pending.
The state has been on edge since the first Nipah death in 2024, with the recent outbreak reigniting concerns. Fruit bats, known carriers of the virus, have been found to harbor Nipah virus antibodies in several districts of Kerala, highlighting the potential for further spread. The World Health Organization has classified Nipah virus as a priority pathogen due to its epidemic potential, for which there is currently no vaccine or specialized treatment.
To contain the outbreak, the Health Minister has declared five wards in Malappuram district as containment zones. All shops in these zones will close by 7 pm, and public gatherings have been banned in spaces like cinema halls, schools, colleges, religious institutions, and tuition centers. Large gatherings are discouraged, and the public has been advised to wear masks in public. Restrictions have also been imposed on the number of attendees at weddings, funerals, and other events in Malappuram.
The Kerala government has implemented these stringent measures to control the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of its citizens. The situation remains under close monitoring, with the health department actively working to identify and isolate potential cases.
