**MALAPPURAM, KERALA:** A 24-year-old student from Kerala has become the latest victim of the deadly Nipah virus, prompting health officials to intensify surveillance efforts. The student, who had travelled from Bengaluru, reportedly began experiencing fever symptoms on September 4th and passed away five days later. A blood sample confirmed the Nipah virus infection after being tested at the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
This marks the second Nipah-related fatality in Malappuram this year, following the death of a 14-year-old boy in July. The virus, known to cause brain swelling and fever, has been linked to dozens of deaths in Kerala since its first emergence in 2018.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Nipah as a priority infection due to its potential for outbreaks. Currently, there is no cure or vaccine available.
In response to the latest fatality, health authorities have initiated close monitoring of 151 individuals who had contact with the victim. Additionally, blood samples have been collected from five other patients exhibiting symptoms of Nipah infection, although their connection to the deceased remains unclear.
Parts of Kerala are recognized globally as high-risk areas for Nipah outbreaks. The virus is believed to originate from fruit bats and can be transmitted to humans through infected animals, such as pigs, and contaminated fruit.
This recent incident has highlighted the ongoing threat posed by Nipah virus, prompting a renewed call for vigilance and rapid response measures to prevent its spread.
