Mon Sep 16 17:56:52 UTC 2024: ## Nipah Virus Resurfaces in Kerala, Leading to Restrictions
**Kochi, Kerala:** The Nipah virus has once again raised concerns in Kerala after a 23-year-old man succumbed to the infection on Monday. Following the death, authorities have imposed strict measures to contain the virus, including making masks mandatory in Malappuram district.
The health minister, Veena George, confirmed that the virus was identified after samples were sent to the Pune virology lab. While the deceased’s close contacts are being traced, the health department has placed 150 individuals under observation, with two showing fever symptoms.
This is the sixth Nipah case reported in Kerala since 2018. The virus, known to be zoonotic, is spread from animals to humans. It was first detected in 1999 and is primarily found in fruit bats, which are not affected by the virus.
The spread to humans happens when animals consume fruits bitten by bats, transmitting the virus. This incident has prompted the Kerala government to take precautionary steps, including shutting down four cinema theatres and educational institutions in the Tirurvali panchayat.
The public has been advised to avoid gatherings as authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to control the spread of the Nipah virus.
