**New York, NY** – Emmy Award-winning actress Maya Rudolph has become synonymous with her portrayal of Vice President Kamala Harris on “Saturday Night Live.” While initially surprised by the opportunity, Rudolph has embraced the challenge, dedicating her time despite her busy schedule with the Apple TV+ series “Loot.”
Rudolph’s portrayal of Harris has resonated with audiences, earning her two Emmy awards for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. The actress has also received praise from the Vice President herself, who approves of Rudolph’s depiction.
“It’s a huge compliment,” Rudolph said in an interview with Variety, “but it was also very bizarre, because I woke up to an article saying that I was confirmed to play her—and I hadn’t spoken to anyone!”
Despite the logistical challenges of balancing her commitments, Rudolph recognizes the significance of playing the first Black female of South Asian descent to be a major political party’s Presidential nominee. “This is so much bigger than me, and this is about something very important,” she stated.
Rudolph’s comedic approach focuses on Harris’s joy and “fun aunt” persona, a direction inspired by a suggestion from “SNL” producer Steve Higgins. This isn’t the first time Rudolph has been tapped to play a major political figure. During her time as a cast member, she was asked to portray then-candidate Barack Obama, but the sketch ultimately didn’t make it to air.
As Rudolph navigates the demands of playing Vice President Harris, her commitment to capturing the essence of the politician while highlighting her humor is evident. With her unique comedic perspective, Rudolph continues to bring a fresh and insightful take to the world of political satire on “Saturday Night Live.”
