Mon Sep 16 15:51:21 UTC 2024: ## Lexar Unveils Blazing Fast SD Card, But No Devices Can Keep Up

Lexar has launched a new SD card, the Professional Gold Pro SDXC Express Card, boasting an impressive 1GB/s write speed and 1.7GB/s read speed. However, the card’s capabilities currently exceed the capabilities of any existing devices.

While the card can be used in standard SD slots, no cameras, computers, or card readers can match its maximum speed. This is despite the SD 8.0 standard being finalized in 2020.

The SD Association is already working on the next version of the standard, SD 9.1, indicating the future potential of this technology. This exceptionally fast card is primarily targeted at photographers and videographers working with massive 8K footage. While current equipment can’t fully utilize its potential, investing in this card anticipates future hardware developments.

However, for users seeking speed and capacity without the need for such extreme performance, portable SSDs offer a more practical and readily available option.

Lexar also unveiled new “ARMOR” SD cards made of stainless steel at IFA in Germany. These durable cards offer a solution to the fragility of traditional plastic cards, particularly important for high-capacity, high-speed cards. However, their impact on cameras and PCs remains to be seen, pending reviews.

While Lexar hasn’t released specific pricing or release dates for these new products, they are expected to hit the market later this year or in early 2025 at a premium price.
