Mon Sep 16 15:50:56 UTC 2024: ## Former AGF Agabi Laments Rampant Election Rigging in Nigeria

**LAGOS, NIGERIA** – Kanu Agabi, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, has raised serious concerns about the high rate of election rigging in Nigeria, stating that public suspicions regarding the electoral process are justified.

In an interview with Channels Television, Agabi, who served under President Olusegun Obasanjo, argued that the widespread challenges to election results are a direct result of widespread distrust in the system. He emphasized that the judiciary, despite its imperfections, remains the best arm of government, but faces immense pressure due to an overwhelming number of cases.

Agabi highlighted the issue of overworked judges, stating that the sheer volume of cases they handle hinders their ability to effectively manage the judicial system. He also condemned the practice of rigging elections at the party level, arguing that leaders who attain office through such means cannot expect divine blessings or lead effectively.

“Primaries are rigged at the party level. Giving a spiritual dimension, when you have obtained the office you are holding through theft, do you expect God to partner with you?” Agabi questioned. He emphasized that holding office through illegitimate means is a “spiritual abomination” that hinders the ability to lead with integrity.

Agabi’s statement reflects growing concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. While the judiciary strives to maintain its independence, the high number of cases and widespread suspicions cast a shadow over the legitimacy of the political system.
