In a dramatic turn of events, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will resign today, paving the way for Atishi, a prominent AAP leader and current Delhi Minister, to become the new Chief Minister. The decision comes in the wake of Kejriwal’s recent arrest in a corruption case related to the city’s liquor policy, which has shaken the AAP’s political landscape.
A meeting of the AAP’s Legislative Party at Kejriwal’s residence resulted in Atishi being unanimously chosen as the leader. The party’s spokesperson, Gopal Rai, announced this decision in a press conference, emphasizing the need for a new leader in these “extraordinary circumstances.”
Kejriwal is expected to submit his resignation to the Lieutenant Governor, Vinay Kumar Saxena, at 4:30 PM today. He will also submit a proposal for the formation of a new government under Atishi’s leadership.
Atishi, who represents the Kalkaji constituency, is currently one of the most powerful figures in the Delhi government, holding multiple ministerial portfolios. She will be the third woman to hold the office of Chief Minister after Sheila Dikshit and Sushma Swaraj.
While the AAP maintains that this is a temporary measure until Kejriwal can reclaim his position, the move has sparked controversy and criticism from the opposition BJP. BJP leaders, including national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari, have accused Kejriwal of seeking to install a “puppet” leader and of lacking trust in his own party.
This political upheaval comes just months ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, scheduled for October-November. It remains to be seen how Atishi will navigate this challenging political landscape, facing a resurgent BJP and a public that may be skeptical of the AAP’s leadership.
