Tue Sep 17 07:10:59 UTC 2024: ## Atishi Elected as New Delhi Chief Minister: Kejriwal Resigns, Calls for Early Elections
**New Delhi, India** – In a dramatic turn of events, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal resigned from his post on Tuesday, fulfilling his promise to step down until he received a “certificate of honesty” from the people. He has been embroiled in an excise policy corruption case, facing bail conditions that restrict his official duties.
Following his resignation, AAP MLAs met and elected Delhi Minister Atishi as the new leader of the legislative party, making her the next Chief Minister.
Kejriwal announced his resignation on Sunday, calling for early polls in Delhi, scheduled for November this year, ahead of the original February date. He justified his resignation by stating his commitment to his principles and desire to regain the public’s trust.
“It does not matter who sits on the CM chair because the mandate was for Arvind Kejriwal,” said AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj. “The public chose Arvind Kejriwal. He has said that he will not sit on the CM chair until the people ask again but the chair belongs to Arvind Kejriwal for these and the next 5 years.”
While Atishi will assume the CM role, Kejriwal remains the convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), holding the leadership position until the upcoming elections.
The BJP has criticized Kejriwal’s resignation as a “political pretence” and a “move borne out of compulsion,” accusing the AAP of corruption and urging for thorough investigations.
The new Delhi Assembly session is scheduled for September 26-27, where Atishi will likely be sworn in as the new Chief Minister.
