Sun Sep 15 16:37:42 UTC 2024: ## New Book Explores Queer Representations in Children’s Animation
**Philadelphia, PA** – Dr. Sotiris Petridis, an adjunct professor at the Hellenic Open University, is seeking chapter proposals for an edited volume titled “Animated Diversity: Queer Representations in Children’s Audiovisual Narratives.” The book will examine the growing presence of LGBTQIA+ characters and themes in children’s animation, television, and film, and analyze their cultural, educational, and social implications.
Historically, children’s media has largely adhered to heteronormative norms. However, the book aims to investigate the increasing prevalence of inclusive narratives, exploring how queer identities are depicted, identifying persistent issues, and examining how young viewers engage with these stories.
Contributions are welcome from a variety of perspectives, including theoretical and empirical studies, and are encouraged to address diverse global contexts.
Potential topics include:
* **The evolution of queer representations in children’s animation**
* **The impact of these representations on young audiences**
* **The role of LGBTQIA+ creators in shaping these narratives**
* **The challenges and opportunities of portraying LGBTQIA+ identities in children’s media**
Interested scholars are encouraged to submit a 300-word proposal and a short bio to animated.diversity.cfp@gmail.com by December 1st, 2024. Accepted proposals will be announced in mid-December, with final chapters due by June 15th, 2025.
The book will be published by the University of Pennsylvania Department of English. For technical inquiries, please contact cfp-help@english.upenn.edu.
