Tue Sep 17 08:10:29 UTC 2024: ## Atishi Named New Delhi Chief Minister, Kejriwal Resigns

**New Delhi, September 17, 2024:** In a significant political development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Minister Atishi has been unanimously chosen as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. The decision was made following the resignation of incumbent Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who stepped down to pave the way for early Assembly elections.

Kejriwal, released on bail from prison earlier this week in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case, announced his resignation on Sunday, stating his desire for the people of Delhi to judge the AAP government’s integrity through an election. He is scheduled to meet Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena at 4:30 p.m. today to formally tender his resignation.

Atishi, currently a Cabinet Minister in the Delhi Government holding key portfolios including Education, PWD, and Power, will become the third woman to lead the Union Territory after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. She has been a prominent figure in the AAP since 2013 and enjoys the support of the party’s MLAs.

The decision to appoint Atishi was reached after a meeting of all AAP legislators, followed by discussions among the party’s political affairs committee. Kejriwal and his former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who was also jailed in the liquor policy case, met on Monday to discuss potential successors. Sisodia, who also announced his intention to face the people’s verdict in an election, echoed Kejriwal’s call for an early poll.

The upcoming election in Delhi is expected to be closely watched, with both the AAP and its political rivals gearing up for a high-stakes battle.
