Sun Sep 15 14:15:00 UTC 2024: ## Wizardry Creator Andrew Greenberg Passes Away, Leaving Legacy of Computer RPGs
**Tokyo, Japan -** Andrew Greenberg, the co-creator of the influential computer RPG series “Wizardry,” has passed away. His death was announced on the official Wizardry franchise’s Twitter account, which described him as a “huge influence” on computer RPGs and gaming culture.
Greenberg and fellow co-creator Robert Woodhead developed the original “Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord” in 1981. The game’s infamous boss, Werdna, is actually Andrew’s name spelled backward, a playful nod to the game’s creator.
“Wizardry” became a landmark franchise, inspiring countless RPGs in both the West and Japan. The series remains exceptionally popular in Japan, where numerous spin-off titles have been released, exceeding the number of core “Wizardry” games. Japanese developer Drecom acquired the copyrights and trademarks for the franchise in 2020.
Despite his later withdrawal from public appearances, Greenberg always remained passionate about his work and readily answered questions about his contributions. The Twitter account highlighted his dedication to the franchise until the very end.
Greenberg, a Cornell University graduate, also worked on games like “Q*bert” and later became a patent lawyer, serving as chairman of the Intellectual Property Committee for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
The gaming community mourns the loss of this influential figure, whose legacy lives on through the enduring “Wizardry” franchise.
