**Houghton, MI – September 12, 2023** – UP Health System – Portage (UPHS – Portage), part of Lifepoint Health, announced the launch of its new Robotic-Assisted Surgical System, a significant advancement in surgical technology for the Keweenaw region. This innovative system, made possible by a $2 million investment from Lifepoint Health, offers patients a less invasive and potentially faster recovery option compared to traditional open surgery.
The da Vinci robotic system utilizes smaller incisions and precise robotic instruments controlled by a surgeon in the operating room. This allows for increased precision during surgery, leading to reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, and decreased complications such as blood loss and infection.
“We’re excited to bring this cutting-edge technology to our patients,” said Donna McMullen, Director of Perioperative and Anesthesia Services at UPHS – Portage. “This robotic system will help our surgeons achieve optimal surgical outcomes, keeping patients closer to home for the care they need.”
UPHS – Portage currently offers robotic-assisted surgery for abdominal and gynecological procedures, including hysterectomy, treatment of endometriosis and uterine fibroids, gallbladder removal, appendix removal, and hernia repair. More surgical specialties are expected to be added as additional surgeons receive training.
Dr. Evon Schexnaydre, Obstetrician and Gynecologist, highlighted the benefits for patients, stating, “This is a great option for patients who are good candidates for robotic surgery. It can help ease their worries since it’s minimally invasive.”
Ryan Heinonen, CEO of UPHS – Portage, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality healthcare options for the community. “We want our patients to explore and understand all available options and know they can receive outstanding care close to home,” he said.
To celebrate the launch, UPHS – Portage will host a “Meet the Robot” event on October 2nd from 5-7 pm at the hospital’s main campus. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the robotic system, ask questions, and even try out the equipment.
