**TOKYO** – The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced a bold new project: a monumental fountain inspired by the city’s official flower, the Somei Yoshino cherry blossom. The planned fountain, located in Odaiba Seaside Park, will stand 150 meters high and stretch 250 meters wide, making it one of the largest fountains in the world.
Governor Yuriko Koike stated that the “Odaiba Fountain” will feature accompanying music and light displays, aiming to further enhance the vibrancy of the area.
The project has sparked mixed reactions. Some, like a 50-year-old man, are optimistic about the potential for increased tourism revenue. Others, like a woman in her 30s, question the need for another artificial attraction in a city already brimming with tourist spots.
The Tokyo government aims to complete the fountain by the end of the next fiscal year, with the budget currently under review.
This ambitious project follows the recent unveiling of a monument at Harumi Pier and projection mapping on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, both of which faced public scrutiny regarding the use of public funds.
It remains to be seen how the public will ultimately react to this latest endeavor, and whether the Odaiba Fountain will become a beloved symbol of Tokyo or another debated use of public funds.
