**Abuja, Nigeria** – The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu, demanding a reduction in the petrol price from N845 per litre to N600 per litre.
The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accuses President Tinubu of failing to direct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to reverse the recent petrol price hike. SERAP argues that the increase is “unjust, illegal, unconstitutional, and unreasonable,” and is causing significant hardship for Nigerians.
The lawsuit also targets the alleged failure of the President to investigate allegations of corruption and mismanagement within the NNPCL. SERAP calls for an investigation by the Attorney General of the Federation and relevant anti-corruption agencies, and seeks the prosecution of any individuals found responsible for these alleged offenses.
The lawsuit comes amidst ongoing tensions regarding the Dangote refinery’s entry into the petrol market. The Federal Government has announced that the NNPCL will be the sole buyer of petrol from the new refinery, despite the NNPCL’s earlier statement that it would not be the exclusive buyer.
SERAP emphasizes that the increase in petrol prices violates constitutional guarantees and international human rights obligations. They argue that the NNPCL’s alleged failure to remit significant oil revenues to the public treasury has contributed to the recent price hike.
The NNPCL has announced the mobilization of 300 trucks to lift petrol from the Dangote refinery, with loading scheduled for September 15th. However, oil marketers have yet to receive details about the price of petrol from the new refinery and continue to purchase from the NNPCL.
A hearing date for the lawsuit has yet to be set.
