Australian driver Oscar Piastri secured his second career victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, in what he described as a “very stressful afternoon”. The race was filled with drama and unexpected twists, leaving the drivers and fans on the edge of their seats.
Pole sitter Charles Leclerc finished in second place while Mercedes’ George Russell completed the podium. The race started with several surprises, as Pierre Gasly was disqualified and Guanyu Zhou penalized for exceeding the allowed number of power unit elements, both relegating them to the back of the grid. Further chaos unfolded as Mercedes and Alpine drivers Lewis Hamilton and Esteban Ocon were forced to start from the pit lane due to last-minute power unit changes.
The race was ultimately decided in a dramatic final lap. Sergio Perez, who had been battling with Leclerc for second place, attempted to overtake him into Turn 1. Leclerc defended fiercely, allowing Carlos Sainz to sneak past and take second place. However, Perez was able to get a better line into Turn 3, and the two drivers collided, sending both into the wall and ending their races. This incident triggered a yellow flag and ultimately ended the race under virtual safety car conditions.
The collision promoted Leclerc to second place and Russell to third. Meanwhile, Lando Norris secured fourth place after passing Max Verstappen with four laps to go. Despite a strong performance, Verstappen appeared powerless against Norris, who even set the fastest lap for McLaren.
Despite a persistent challenge from Leclerc, Piastri maintained control and secured a well-deserved victory. This was his second win in Formula One, and he admitted on the radio after the race that it was “probably the most stressful afternoon of my life”.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix delivered a thrilling and unexpected race, with McLaren emerging as the victor, while Verstappen’s lead in the championship was challenged. The race also highlighted the ongoing debate about engine cover design philosophy, as Ferrari and Mercedes continue to explore different approaches to maximize performance.
