Sun Sep 15 14:24:24 UTC 2024: ## Piastri’s “Extraordinary” Overtake Propels McLaren to Championship Lead
Oscar Piastri’s stunning overtake of Charles Leclerc at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has been hailed as a potential championship-defining moment, propelling McLaren to the top of the Constructors’ Championship standings.
Leclerc, starting from pole, initially led Piastri in the early stages, but the McLaren driver, hampered by tire degradation, slowly closed the gap after both drivers pitted for hard tires. On lap 19, Piastri, with the aid of DRS, closed the gap to Leclerc to within 20 meters while traveling at over 330 kilometers per hour.
He then executed a daring move, cutting to the inside and grabbing the racing line, requiring perfect braking to avoid the wall at Turn 1. The move stuck, and Leclerc’s attempts to counter were thwarted as Piastri held his ground.
Piastri held off Leclerc’s subsequent attempts to retake the lead, ultimately securing his second Grand Prix victory as Leclerc suffered rear tire degradation.
Adding to McLaren’s success was a remarkable recovery drive from Lando Norris, who started in 15th but finished fourth, also claiming the fastest lap bonus point. This combined performance propelled McLaren ahead of Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship.
While Red Bull is expected to have an improved car starting in the United States Grand Prix next month, this overtake could prove to be a turning point for McLaren, who are seeking their first title since 1998.
