Sun Sep 15 11:24:22 UTC 2024: ## 49ers Tried to Trade for Star WR Justin Jefferson, But Vikings Held Firm

The San Francisco 49ers made a play for Minnesota Vikings’ star wide receiver Justin Jefferson this offseason, but the Vikings shut down any potential trade talks, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The interest came as the 49ers sought to address their wide receiver corps, with Brandon Aiyuk pushing for a new contract.

While the 49ers ultimately signed Aiyuk to a long-term deal, Jefferson remained in Minnesota. The Jets and Colts also reportedly expressed interest in Jefferson, but the Vikings ultimately refused to deal their prized asset.

The Vikings’ resolve was solidified when they signed Jefferson to a record-breaking contract in the summer, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. The move came after a 2023 season marred by a hamstring injury that limited him to just 10 games.

Despite the injury, Jefferson still finished with 1,074 receiving yards, marking his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season. He also set a new NFL record for the most receiving yards in a player’s first four years.

Jefferson’s presence is even more crucial this year, as the Vikings navigate a new era with veteran backup Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback. Darnold will need all the talent he can get, and Jefferson’s health will be critical to the Vikings’ chances of making the playoffs.
