Sun Sep 15 12:48:54 UTC 2024: ## WSL2 Ubuntu Upgrade Causes Time Jump and Log Loss

**Seattle, WA – September 13, 2024:** A recent upgrade from Ubuntu 22.04.5 to Ubuntu 24.04.1 in the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2) has caused an issue for some users, leading to time jumps and a loss of persistent log data.

Users are reporting frequent “Clock change detected. Flushing caches.” and “Time jumped backwards, rotating.” messages in their system logs (‘journalctl’, ‘dmesg’, and ‘syslog’). These messages appear to have begun shortly after the upgrade was performed.

This issue may result in the loss of old journalctl messages, even though the ‘/var/log/journal/’ directory is present and configured for persistent storage. While the system might be up for more than 15 hours, the oldest logged messages are from just over an hour ago.

The cause of the issue is suspected to be related to time synchronization, although this is not yet confirmed.

Users experiencing this problem have attempted to resolve it by deleting the contents of the ‘/var/log/journal/’ directory, but this has not provided a long-term solution.

Stack Overflow, the largest online community for developers, is currently investigating the issue and seeking further information from affected users.
