**Baku, Azerbaijan** – Oscar Piastri delivered a masterclass in driving at the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, securing his second Grand Prix victory and earning high praise from 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve.
Piastri’s performance was described as “perfect” by Villeneuve, who commented, “He did the overtaking, he was quick after, he didn’t crack under pressure. He was perfect.” The Australian driver, who started the race in second, managed to take the lead on lap 20 and held it for the remaining 35 laps, fending off a strong challenge from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
“I tried at the start to get in front, but once I got out of DRS I didn’t have the pace,” said Piastri. “After the stop, I saw we were pretty close again. I felt like we had a bit of extra grip and thought we had to go for it because I thought I’d never get past otherwise.”
Piastri’s victory is a testament to McLaren’s remarkable turnaround. The team, which was languishing at the bottom of the standings last year, now sits at the top of the leaderboard. “Where we started when I joined, we were literally last. Now we are leading the championship,” Piastri remarked. “Full credit to the team. Results like this weren’t possible 12 months ago.”
Leclerc, who started from pole position, finished second after a strong fight, while George Russell took third place. Max Verstappen, who battled car setup issues, finished fifth.
The race also saw a chaotic final lap with Perez and Sainz colliding with the wall, bringing the race to a finish under the virtual safety car.
With this win, McLaren has firmly established itself as a force to be reckoned with this season. The team will face stiff competition from Ferrari, which has shown significant improvements in pace over the last two races.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was a thrilling spectacle, showcasing Piastri’s talent and McLaren’s resurgence. The season continues to be a tight battle, and the next race promises to be another exciting chapter in the Formula 1 narrative.
